Perspectives of Periowave™ – Views From A Registered Dental Hygienist

This week is National Dental Hygienists Week. It marks a fantastic opportunity to highlight the important role dental hygienists play in maintaining good oral health. As prevention professionals, we help patients understand how oral hygiene is more than just teeth, and that gum care is key in their overall health. As many of you may already know, gum disease continues to be the #1 cause of tooth loss in adults, and over half of all people today over the age of 30 have some form of this disease.

As a practicing dental hygienist in a periodontal practice in Saskatchewan for almost 30 years, I have treated thousands of patients that present with cases of severe gum disease. For many years now, I have believed that we have been missing something in the treatment of periodontal disease. Scaling and root planing, or periodontal debridement, is not 100% effective and patients are very keen on avoiding painful periodontal surgery. In my heart of hearts, I thought that there would be some ‘magical antibiotic’ that we would be able to prescribe patients. But this was not the case, and I realized that there had to be a better solution for my patients.

"Not only are we winning the battle against gum disease, with Periowave we are winning the war"

Today, we have alternate treatment plans that now include the use of PeriowaveTM. We as clinicians and we as patients need to realize that bleeding “gums” are not normal, nor are they healthy or acceptable. We need to properly diagnose and treat this disease since oral health is an integral part of good general health. I have seen case after case of successful PeriowaveTM treatments. With the addition of this technology, we return patients to good oral health. Not only are we winning the battle against gum disease, with PeriowaveTM we are winning the war.

Patients notice the difference in their mouths from appearance to taste. For those patients with advanced periodontal disease and where no further surgical treatment is viable, we have successfully treated their hopeless teeth with treatments of PeriowaveTM. Not only have my patients noticed a change in the appearance of their tissue, the biggest improvement has been the taste in their mouth. Think about all the bacteria, bleeding, exudate and the taste that these patients must have endured. After using PeriowaveTM, the oral health of my patients has improved drastically and they tell me that they are enjoying the flavors of food for the first time in years! With PeriowaveTM , we are improving the quality of life for these people.

After practicing for almost 30 years I’m so excited to be part of this new technology. I was waiting for something like this to provide the best care for my patients.
